Living in Jubail: A Practical Guide for Expats
Moving to Jubail usually starts with a job offer. Your employer sponsors your residence permit (iqama) and must provide health insurance. Jubail has international schools with American, IB and Indian CBSE programmes, plus private and government hospitals. Leases are documented through the government Ejar platform, and they now renew automatically across Saudi Arabia.
This guide covers the practical side of settling in. For the basics of the city itself, such as the difference between the old town and Jubail Industrial City, climate and time zone, see Jubail facts. Dress, Ramadan, money and alcohol rules are on Jubail travel tips.
How do residency and the iqama work in Jubail?
Your sponsor handles it. The UK government's guidance for residents says you need a sponsor, normally your employer, to move to Saudi Arabia, and that the sponsor must arrange your residence permit, the iqama, once you arrive (Source: GOV.UK, Living in Saudi Arabia, updated 27 February 2026).
According to Middle East Briefing, the employer starts the iqama application within 90 days of your arrival, through the Ministry of Interior's Muqeem platform or Absher (Source: Middle East Briefing, updated August 2025).
As guidance: before you fly, ask your employer which documents they need from you and who pays the fees for family members.
Which international schools are in Jubail?
Two international schools have official records we could read and check.
| School | Curriculum | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| ISG Jubail (International Schools Group) | American standards-based curriculum to grade 10; IB Diploma Programme in grades 11 and 12 | ISG; Wikipedia |
| International Indian School, Jubail | Indian CBSE curriculum, affiliated at senior secondary level until 31 March 2028 | CBSE affiliation record 5730007; Wikipedia |
ISG's own high school page says students take the two-year IB Diploma from grade 11, and Wikipedia describes ISG Jubail as a campus combining American and international curricula in the industrial city. The CBSE record lists the Indian school at P.O. Box 1188, Al Jubail.
Other schools exist, but we list only those with an official record we could read. Places, fees and admission rules change each year, so contact the school directly.
How does healthcare work for expats in Jubail?
Health insurance comes through your sponsor. The UK government states that your sponsor must provide medical insurance and that your type of cover decides which medical facilities you can use. Middle East Briefing reports that iqama renewals are now checked against the national health insurance platform for the full permit period.
Jubail has both private and government hospitals. Mouwasat Hospital Jubail, in Jubail Industrial City, lists 24/7 emergency services on its own site. Jubail General Hospital is the Ministry of Health's hospital for the governorate. The Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu also runs a health services programme in the Industrial City; in April 2025 its family medicine service earned Joint Commission International accreditation for the fourth time in a row (Source: Saudi Press Agency, 22 April 2025).
For medical advice that is not urgent, the Ministry of Health's 937 line runs around the clock. Emergency numbers and the hospital details are on Jubail emergency numbers.
How do you rent a home in Jubail?
Through a lease registered on Ejar, the government's electronic leasing network. Rules approved on 25 September 2025 say landlords must apply to register any lease not yet on Ejar, and tenants also have the right to register it (Source: Real Estate General Authority, 25 September 2025).
Leases across the Kingdom now renew automatically unless one side gives notice at least 60 days before the end date (Source: King and Spalding, 29 September 2025). The five-year rent freeze announced at the same time covers Riyadh's urban area only, so it does not apply in Jubail.
We found no official register of residential compounds in Jubail Industrial City, so this page names none. As guidance, ask your employer whether housing or a housing allowance is part of your contract, and get the lease on Ejar before you pay.
What does it cost to live in Jubail?
We could not find a current, Jubail-specific cost-of-living figure from an official source, so we publish none. Rents, school fees and insurance depend on your contract and change each year. Ask your employer and the schools for current figures in writing.
Can you drive in Jubail with your own licence?
Not for long as a resident. The UK government says your sponsor can help exchange a British licence for a Saudi one through Absher's online services, and that a UK licence cannot be renewed or replaced while you live in Saudi Arabia. Drivers from other countries should check their own government's guidance.
A car matters here: the old town and the Al Fanateer seafront are about 23 km apart by road. Getting around is covered on Jubail travel tips.
